Top Perlite Uses

Perlite is a naturally occurring volcanic rock that has gained enormous popularity and applicability in many fields. Depending on how the perlite is heated, its size, and the nature and intensity of the heat, the perlite is transformed into a light and porous material utilized in construction, horticulture, and various types of industries, and thus is an essential product.

In the construction industry, it is used in the manufacture of lightweight concrete and plasters for thermal insulation and the minimization of the total load-bearing structure. In horticulture, it enhances the physical property of the soil by enhancing aeration in addition to drainage, hence providing a healthier plant environment.

Horticulture and Gardening

Food production sub-sectors such as horticulture and gardening are among the major industries that use perlite significantly. These fields are aligned to perlite by the fact that it helps the soil which has a water compliance to aerate.

When incorporated into the soil it makes it possible to have a well-drained soil mass but also at the same time it possesses the capacity to retain enough water for the requirement of the growing plant.

Construction and Insulation

In the construction field, perlite is applied in production of concrete blocks, in the preparation of lightweight concrete and as a plaster. Another merit of perlite concrete is that it has relatively a better insulating value especially in the thermal point of view, hence it can be used in the construction of energy saving structures.

This material is also used in roofs and flooring and other uses include as insulating material on walls.

Industrial Applications

Perlite is also used in other industrial applications because of its several physical and chemical properties. One of its major uses is in the filtration of fluids like wines, beers, fruits juices and the like and as a filter media.

When combined with perlite, the impurities do not go into the liquid state but remain at the surface of the perlite and so the final product is clear. Besides, it is used in paint and plastic and rubber industries as a filling material to provide a smooth texture low density and high thermal insulating property

Environmental and Waste Management

The application of perlite is gradually getting adopted in the environmental and waste management industries because of its mopping properties and light weight. It is used to sop up oil and other toxic fluids; characteristics that enable it to be sucked and as such be easily ejected.

Perlites are also used in the construction of landfill covers and as a package and soil amendment when it is necessary to improve the conditions of the contaminated sites to be remediated.

Conclusion

Therefore, perlite can be used in many industries because of its versatility. Perlite is used in horticulture construction and industrial fields, hence the flexibility of perlite to be used in assessment of impact on the environment.
