Is apples high in lysine?

Health supplements have been around for decades and seem like it is here to stay for a very long time to come. With the long years of existence of such products, there are certainly many types of supplements that exist in many forms and feature many kinds of active ingredients. Since there are various health supplements products available to the public, it can be quite difficult to choose which one is the best one. One of the supplements that may seem new but has already been around in the market for quite a while is lysine fruity tablets.

Lysine may not be as famous as other nutrients such as vitamin B or C but it is surely an important nutrient that plays roles in the human body. Lysine is an essential amino acid. An essential amino acid is amino acids that is not produced by the human body but it is still needed by the body to perform many important functions such as building strong bones and teeth by helping the body to absorb calcium, boost energy levels by converting fatty acids into energy by producing carnitine and to produce supporting substances in the body such as hormones, enzymes and antibodies. Lysine also helps to regulate a person’s mood by preventing a person from being easily irritable and fatigued. Some studies show supplementation of lysine helps to reduce risk for heart diseases by lowering blood pressure, lowering cholesterol level and preventing formation of blood clot and fats inside the blood vessels which are the causes of most heart diseases.

Taking lysine from a supplement is the most convenient way and certainly the best way as the dosage is typically accurate. It is recommended to get lysine in dosage of 500 mg, twice to thrice daily. Research shows that 3000 mg of lysine via mouth or oral for a period of one year is safe. A healthy person is allowed to consume approximately 3 grams of lysine in a day without potential side effects. It is important to take lysine supplements according to the recommendation by healthcare professionals or as instructed on the product’s label. Taking lysine in excessive amounts may lead to side effects such as stomach aches, nausea, abdominal cramp and diarrhoea. High doses of lysine in the long term may result in serious health issues such as formation of gallstones and kidney failures.

Although obtaining lysine in the form of a supplement seems the easiest way to get it, this does not mean a person is not able to get it from food. Some people might be asking if fruits such as apples are high in lysine. Well, yes it does. A cup of quartered or chopped apples which is approximately weighted 125 grams contains 15 mg of lysine. Aside from fruits, other fruits such as avocado, starfruit, mango, papaya, guava, kiwifruits, oranges, pear and berries can be alternatives to apples. For those who may not be a fan of fruits and vegetables, you can get lysine from beef, chicken, sardines, eggs, dairy products and soybean products such as tempeh and tofu.

No matter how much lysine you are getting from food, it is still the best way to get lysine and other nutrients. This means that when you are eating food, not only one nutrient you will be getting, but also many other nutrients just by having it in one go. Besides, eating good food does have a positive effect on mood and behaviour. Make sure to practise healthy eating habits by eating balanced meals and to have an active lifestyle as these two are the mainstay for a person to lead a healthy life.
