Shield Your Skin With Sunscreen

Hi dolls! This week I’ve decided to give you guys the low-down on all things sunscreen- and why you should wear it. (A real quick fun-fact about me, I went to school for Esthetics which is skincare & makeup! Hence the balance between makeup & skincare articles) Sunscreen is a necessity, NOT an option.

When it comes to skincare, sunscreen is THE single-handedly most important step to take in your routine for both your face & body. Now I know what you’re thinking, “But sunscreen makes me oily!” “I always forget!” “They’re so expensive!” Well I’m here to give you the solution to those problems.

Sunscreen absorbs & reflects ultraviolet radiation from excessive sun exposure, which in turn protects & prevents the skin from absorbing those rays and burning. To give you a quick breakdown, there are three different UV rays: UVA, UVB, and UVC. Thankfully, we only have to worry about two of those rays as UVC rays are blocked by the ozone layer and do not reach the earth’s surface. UVA rays are shorter waves, more constant year-round and penetrate deeper into the skin’s layers but absorbs less; this means they are very harmful & contribute to burning, premature aging of the skin, and the development of certain forms of skin cancer. UVB rays are longer waves & the primary cause of sunburns, premature aging of the skin and the development of skin cancer as they do not penetrate as deep into the skin’s layers but are absorbed more which allows for excess harm.

In short, you always need to wear sunscreen & make it a habit. When looking for a sunscreen that’s right for you, always, ALWAYS find a sunscreen that is broad spectrum and at least SPF 30- this will ensure you are well protected from both UVB and UVA rays. Some makeup products have SPF in them but do not depend on them for all your sun protection, it could wear off throughout the day so wear a sunscreen underneath your makeup as well.
